Concrete Pavers - DIY Sealing Tips

Concrete pavers add value to your property. Concrete is known for its durability
and that makes it an ideal material for patios; however it is very important
to seal concrete pavers to ensure its longevity. Here are few simple tips
to help you seal your concrete pavers
Preparation- Sweep and remove all the dust and debris from the surface. After the
surface is thoroughly swept, pressure-wash the surface. The pressure should
be set to high to remove stubborn stains, dirt and dust. If there are
any stains on your pavers, ensure that the stains have been completely
removed before sealing. Use a cleaner appropriate to the type of stain.
Follow the directions recommended by the manufacturer of the cleaner you select.
Cracked Areas and Surrounding Structures- Fill up any cracked or hollow areas on the patio surface so that those
areas are in level with rest of the surface. Check if there are any structures
that need to be covered up to protect them from any sealer which may accidentally
land on them. You can cover these areas using a canvas cloth.
What Type of Sealer Are You Using? Is your sealer water based or solvent based? If you are using a water
based sealer, you do not have to wait for the surface to dry completely
– a damp surface is OK; however, when using a solvent based sealer,
you must wait until the surface dries. You can use a low pressure airless
spray to apply the sealer, or a brush or lambswool applicator.
Applying Sealer- Thoroughly read the manufacturer’s instructions written on the
pack, before you start applying the sealer. For safety purposes, put on
gloves, and wear any other personal protective clothing/equipment the
manufacturers recommend, before you start the process. Follow the instructions
mentioned on the pack of the sealer before applying the sealer to the
pavers. Make sure that the surface is evenly coated. Do not allow the
sealer to pool on the surface. Each coat should be a full coat.
Points To Remember
- Always do a test patch first.
- The sealer sets in a couple of hours.
- You can apply the second coat while the first is still wet if using a spray
applicator.
- Make sure that there is no chance of rain for at least the next 12 hours
after sealing.
- When sealing, ensure the temperature is not over 30°C or under 5°C.
- It is important to leave the area undisturbed for a full day after sealing.
- Surface sealers generally need to be reapplied every 1-2 years.
- Penetrating sealers will protect your pavers for longer. The time between
re-sealing will depend on which brand of sealer you have chosen.
- Choosing a penetrating sealer will extend the life of your pavers.
- Sealing will protect concrete from staining, efflorescence, picture framing,
freeze-thaw and salt attack.
