Cleaning and Sealing of Travertine

Before you get down to sealing, it is very important for you to understand the purpose of it. The idea is to prevent it from stains. It is therefore very important to clean it before you seal it.

In order to clean the floor, you can use a dust mop. You can also vacuum it, however you should never use one with a beater bar.

You can use a stone cleaner for cleaning, but it should be in accordance with the instructions given by the manufacturer. Also rinse clean the area without overwetting it.

You must make sure that the floor is completely dry before you start with the sealing process.

The next step is to choose a sealer. Like sealers for concrete pavers , sealers for travertine are either impregnating or topical. The former doesn’t change the appearance while the latter does. Sealers are either solvent or water borne. You can get this information from the dealer. If it is solvent, you can wipe it on and remove the excess. Water borne sealer must be carefully removed as it can leave behind a hard to remove residue.

Leave the sealer for 5-10 minutes, wipe off the excess one and allow it to dry for about 2 hrs. To check whether another coat of sealer needs to be applied or not, sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. If you see bubbles, it doesn’t need any more coating.

Whether it is concrete pavers or travertine, sealants reduce frequent periodic maintenance which makes your life easy.
